- Biography
Dr. Philip Lewis is an award winning fiction and documentary filmmaker specializing in interactive and international visual storytelling. Throughout his career, he has produced and directed dozens of films and television programs for worldwide distribution. Over his 40-year career in the industry, he has worked for CBS, NBC, MTV, National Geographic, Sony Pictures, TNT Productions as well as his own media companies throughout Europe, America and Australia.
Professor Lewis' accomplishments include winning an ACE Award in 1990, the Local Legacy Award by the Library of Congress in 1999, a Spotlight Documentary Award in 2021 and numerous other festival and scholarly awards.
At GSU he focuses on his student's success and is dedicated to Classroom to Career initiatives that bring successful students work in the industry. His teaching in the areas of Producing and Sound design give students skills that are invaluable to the industry. He also teaches Directing, Interactive Film Design, Short Film Production and Media Industries.
Dr. Lewis is dedicated to international experiences for our GSU students, and he oversees both the Internship and the Study Abroad programs for the School of Film, Media & Theatre.

Dr. Lewis’ current documentary is an exposé on women’s roles in 21st century Africa. Women Are the Change was released worldwide in the summer of 2014. He also recently released Painting My Miracle: The Conservation of New Mexico State University's 19th Century Mexican Retablo Collection in the spring of 2015.
