Freer is a Professor of Music at Georgia State University, where he conducts the Tenor-Bass Choir and directs the doctoral programs in music education. The GSU Tenor-Bass Choir was one of four national finalists for the 2023 American Prize in Choral Performance (large university division), with multiple performances at state, national, and international conferences. Dr. Freer has also served as a Visiting Professor at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg (Austria) and at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain). He earned his degrees from Westminster Choir College and Teachers College-Columbia University.
Dr. Freer has conducted or presented in 40 states and 30 countries. He is the immediate past Editor of the International Journal of Research in Choral Singing, a past editor of Music Educators Journal, and a member of the ACDA National Standing Committee for Research & Publications. His research and pedagogical expertise primarily focus on working with boys and their changing voices, from prepubescence to young adulthood. Dr. Freer is a recipient of the Outstanding Senior Faculty Award for Research & Creative Activity in GSU’s College of the Arts.
Dr. Freer is also a member of the Executive Board of the IMC: Tenor-Bass Consortium (Intercollegiate Men’s Choruses). He currently serves as the chair of the Executive Committee for the GSU University Senate and represents GSU on the Faculty Council of the University System of Georgia.
