Statement of Purpose (Moving Image Studies track)
Please submit a statement that summarizes your research, creative, academic, and/or professional interests, and that details your intellectual interests as they relate to either Moving Image Studies or Moving Image Production. If you wish, feel free to use the statement to bring information you think is of importance to the attention of faculty reviewers. For example, if your application contains some evidence of a special strength or a weakness, you might choose to address that in your statement. If your undergraduate or graduate transcripts would benefit from additional explanation (e.g., if you wish to call to our attention your higher grades in relevant courses, or your record of improvement), then it would be appropriate to add that language to this statement as well. Overall: why do you wish to pursue graduate studies with the GSU School of Film, Media, & Theatre? If you are undecided about the particular direction you wish to pursue, then do your best to specify the general direction in which you are heading.

The graduate committee requests that applicants submit a portfolio of creative work either by uploading files (file limitation 5GB) or include accessible links. The portfolio should be representative of the applicant’s current body of artistic work, preferably moving image based. Applicants may upload or link to a total of 5 items totaling 30 minutes of content. We will accept a range of artistic practices within the portfolio but if your primary medium is not film, please use the personal statement to describe how you hope to transition your work to moving images. Please include a “List of Works” page at the beginning of the portfolio indicating the items included using the following format: Title, medium, running time (if applicable), and date of completion (the List of Works page will not count as one of your 5 uploads). You may submit examples of work from longer pieces. If you are providing links to a password-protected website, please include the link and the password in the application.

Applicants should organize the personal statement as a reflection of the intentions of your creative work as represented by your portfolio. Explain how your work relates to your broader filmmaking goals, indicate your filmmaking influences, and describe how your work fits within a broader artistic trajectory. Be sure to include how you plan to achieve those goals while attending Georgia State University’s School of Film, Media & Theatre and engaging with the Atlanta community. Identify the faculty you hope to work with and explain how you see their tutelage connecting to your creative work and your long-term filmmaking goals.
Writing Sample
As part of the program, you are required to take classes with significant writing requirements. To that end, we ask that applicants submit an academic writing sample that reflects work they have done in an educational setting, preferably as part of a Bachelor’s degree program or a Master’s program. The sample should be no longer than 20 pages (double spaced) and should reflect the professionalism and rigor commensurate with the requirements of a class term paper (i.e. Citations, argumentation, research/analysis, and bibliography).
