As a part of Atlanta Arts Week, the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design Galleries hosted an exhibition reception for "Cutting Through Mountains To Bring Water: The Sculptures of Liu Shiming." The showcase, which honors the life work of Liu Shiming, marks the inaugural year for a new scholarship established by the artist's foundation. Sept. 8 - Oct. 28, 2022.
Liu Shiming (1926 - 2010) was a member of the Central Academy of Fine Art's first generation of Chinese sculptors. He grounded his work in a Chinese local context, developing a folk art style within the Chinese tradition through ancient modeling methods. In 2018, the Central Academy of Fine Arts established the Liu Shiming Sculpture Museum, which is dedicated to researching and investigating Liu’s artworks and their art historical meaning. The exhibition at the Welch School Gallery includes twenty-four sculptures in wood, bronze and ceramic, all on loan from the Liu Shiming Foundation in New York City, which supports student scholarships in three-dimensional mediums at our school.
