COTA FACULTY AWARDS 2024
The Outstanding Junior Faculty Award recognizes a regular junior faculty member in the College of the Arts for outstanding achievement in their assigned areas of specialty (teaching, service, and/or research/creative activity) while at Georgia State University.
Eligibility: all regular faculty in the college who are at the rank of professor of practice, expert-in-residence, academic professional, lecturer, instructor, or assistant professor and have served for less than seven years. Faculty must have received ratings higher than Good in the categories of their 2021 annual evaluation or are endorsed by their school director. Previous recipients of this award are ineligible.
Process: after an electronic nomination and self-nomination period (please see the form at http://thearts.gsu.edu/faculty-staff-resources/faculty-awards/), the Office of the Dean will contact all eligible nominees to ensure that they wish to be considered. Those who do wish to be considered should submit the following documents to [email protected]:
- A current CV, and
- A statement summarizing and describing the faculty member’s outstanding achievement as it relates to teaching, service, and/or research/creative activity. This statement should not exceed three pages.
- Optional: one letter of recommendation written by someone in a position to describe the nominee’s contributions.
After the deadline for submission of these materials, the Office of the Dean will convene a committee of faculty from each of the units contained in the college to select the recipient of the award. When possible, previous awardees will be part of the committee.
Award: the chosen recipient of the Outstanding Junior Faculty Award will receive $3000 in professional development funds provided by the Office of the Dean, which must be fully used in the subsequent academic year. Funds must be spent in accordance with university guidelines.
The Outstanding Faculty Award in Research/Creative Activity recognizes a regular faculty member in the College of the Arts for outstanding achievement in the area of research/creative activity with emphasis on the last three years at Georgia State University. Research/creative activity is evaluated in terms of quality appropriate to the particular discipline. Research/creative activity includes, but is not limited to, invited and contributed presentations and performances; refereed and invited publications; outside funding for the support of research/creative pursuits; exhibitions; and published/copyrighted media such as film, television, and audio.
Eligibility: all regular faculty in the college are eligible for this award if they have received a rating higher than Good in research/creative activity in their 2021 annual evaluation or are endorsed by their school director. Previous recipients of this award are eligible again after 5 years.

The Outstanding Faculty Award in Teaching recognizes a regular faculty member in the College of the Arts for outstanding achievement in the area of teaching with emphasis on the last three years at Georgia State University. Teaching activities include, but are not limited to, performance as reflected on student evaluations; innovative teaching techniques; course and program development; authorship of textbooks, software, and other similar instructional materials; student accomplishments; direction of individual student work; teaching grants; and honors or awards for teaching.
Eligibility: all regular faculty in the college are eligible for this award if they have received a rating higher than Good in teaching in their 2021 annual evaluation or are endorsed by their school director. Previous recipients of this award are eligible again after 5 years.

- Student evaluations from GoSOLAR (with written comments) for all courses taught within the last three years, and
- A statement summarizing and describing the faculty member’s teaching philosophy and outstanding achievement in teaching with emphasis on the last three years. This statement should not exceed three pages.
- Optional: one letter of recommendation written by someone in a position to describe the significance of the nominee’s teaching.
