The Outstanding Junior Faculty Award in Research/Creative Activity recognizes an assistant professor in the College of the Arts for outstanding achievement in the area of research/creative activity while at Georgia State University. Research/creative activity is the primary focus of this award, but instruction and service may also be considered. Research/creative activity is evaluated in terms of quality appropriate to the particular discipline. Research/creative activity includes, but is not limited to, invited and contributed presentations and performances; refereed and invited publications; outside funding for the support of research/creative pursuits; exhibitions; and published/copyrighted media such as film, television, and audio.
Eligibility: full-time faculty in all disciplines represented in the college at the rank of assistant professor at the time of the nomination or self-nomination are eligible for this award. Previous recipients of this award are ineligible, as are faculty who have received a rating of Good or lower in research/creative activity in their annual reports within the last three years or since their appointment at Georgia State if it was less than three years ago.
Process: after an electronic nomination and self-nomination period (please see the form at http://thearts.gsu.edu/faculty-staff-resources/faculty-awards/), the Office of the Dean will contact all eligible nominees to ensure that they wish to be considered. Those who do wish to be considered should submit the following documents to cotaawards@gsu.edu:
- A current CV, and
- A Statement of Research/Creative Interests and Goals. This document should include a summary of research/creative activities while at Georgia State University; specific research/creative interests and goals; and plans to further these interests and to achieve these goals during the next five years. This statement should not exceed five typed, double-spaced pages.
- Optional: one letter of recommendation written by someone in a position to describe the significance of the research/creative activities, interests, and goals of the nominee.
After the deadline for submission of these materials, the Office of the Dean will convene a committee of faculty from each of the units contained in the college to select the recipient of the award. When possible, previous awardees will be part of the committee.
Award: the chosen recipient of the Outstanding Junior Faculty Award in Research/Creative Activity will receive $2,400 in professional development funds provided by the Office of the Dean. Funds will be used for professional travel, conference attendance, or other projects related to the research/creative and/or teaching agenda; funds shall be fully used in the subsequent academic year. Funds must be spent in accordance with university guidelines.

The Outstanding Senior Faculty Award in Research/Creative Activity recognizes a tenured professor or tenured associate professor in the College of the Arts for outstanding achievement in the area of research/creative activity with emphasis on the last three years at Georgia State University. Research/creative activity is the primary focus of this award, but instruction and service may also be considered. Research/creative activity is evaluated in terms of quality appropriate to the particular discipline. Research/creative activity includes, but is not limited to, invited and contributed presentations and performances; refereed and invited publications; outside funding for the support of research/creative pursuits; exhibitions; and published/copyrighted media such as film, television, and audio.

The Outstanding Teaching Award recognizes a regular, full-time faculty member in the College of the Arts for outstanding achievement in the area of teaching with emphasis on the last three years at Georgia State University. Teaching activities include, but are not limited to, performance as reflected on student evaluations; innovative teaching techniques; course and program development; authorship of textbooks, software, and other similar instructional materials; student accomplishments; direction of individual student work; teaching grants; and honors or awards for teaching.
Eligibility: full-time tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenure track faculty in all disciplines represented in the college at the rank of professor, associate professor, assistant professor, principal senior lecturer, senior lecturer, lecturer, senior academic professional, academic professional, and instructor at the time of the nomination or self-nomination are eligible for this award. The following faculty are ineligible: 1) recipients of this award over the past five years; 2) faculty retiring at the end of the academic year; 3) faculty who have received a rating of Good or lower in the area of teaching in their annual reports within the last three years.

This document should include the candidate’s educational philosophy; a summary of teaching accomplishments in the last three years; a set of goals and objectives in teaching for the next five years; and a plan to achieve these goals and objectives. This statement should not exceed five typed, double-spaced pages.
- Optional: one letter of recommendation written by someone in a position to describe the significance of the teaching effectiveness, interests, and goals of the nominee.
After the deadline for submission of these materials, the Office of the Dean will convene a committee of faculty from each of the units contained in the college to select the recipient of the award. When possible, previous awardees will be part of the committee. In addition to the materials submitted by the candidate, COTA will provide the committee with a summary of Student Evaluation of Instructor (SEI) numerical scores for the last three years for all candidates.
