Jazz at Lincoln Center presents “Songs We Love: 50 Years of Jazz Song”
Under the musical direction of trombonist Mariel Bildsten, the program featured three guest vocalists Brianna Thomas, Shenel Johns and Vuyo Sotashe and was joined an all-star band made up of New York’s rising stars discovered by Wynton Marsalis. Combining their distinct talents, the group sang their way through four decades of music, beginning with the early blues and jazz of the 1920s and ending in the early 1950s. “Songs We Love” was first presented as the 2016 Season Opener at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Jeff "Tain" Watts with the Georgia State Jazz Band
Jeff Watts, the drummer they call "Tain," spent his formative years with Wynton and Branford Marsalis, and his compositional skills now command equal attention. Watts was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2017. A true jazz innovator, Watts never fails to deliver the percussive magic that has been his trademark since his emergence on the contemporary jazz scene. (April 21, 2023).
Both programs are part of the 2022/2023 Rialto Series: Season of Power + Spirit.
