Music is clearly at the core of School of Music alumnus Jonathan Kochik (B.Mu. ’16 / M.Mu. ’19), currently the Director of Bands at Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee (GA) and the Creative Director and Owner of Jonathan Kochik Music, LLC. In this edition of Artistic Voices, we caught up with Kochick, who passionately talks about his commitment to music, the rewards of teaching, entrepreneurship and more.
Kochik is an Atlanta-based musician who received his Master of Music degree in wind band conducting and a Bachelor of Music degree in performance (horn) from Georgia State University. In addition to teaching, Kochik is an active composer and arranger with a wide array of writing and design experience at high school and collegiate levels. Over the years, he has enjoyed numerous commissions for original works for wind band, soundtrack designs for competitive winterguard shows, and show arrangements for competitive marching bands. From 2014 to 2018, in collaboration with Dr. Robert J. Ambrose, Kochik created the first critical edition of the landmark wind band work “Arctic Dreams” by the late Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Michael Colgrass and published by Carl Fischer Music in 2019.
