Graduating this fall is Jalen Amir King, an interdisciplinary artist in the B.A. Studio program at the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design. Before the diploma hand-off, we caught up with Jalen about their art influences, studio practice and what it was like to be featured in Italian Vogue.
Jalen primarily works in photography, sculpture and painting. Their art typically explores religion, the cosmos, as well as the histories and evolving image of the African diaspora. With concern for world-building and mythology, Jalen explores relations and reality or, ultimately, what it means to be real, unreal, and surreal in a decidedly anti-black world.
Jalen is one of three recipients for the 2021/22 Dr. Doris Derby Award. Read about their profile in Italian Vogue.
