Victor Pires is a master's degree candidate (M.Mu. ' 23) for trumpet performance under the guidance of Dr. Alexander Freund at Georgia State University School of Music. Hear from Pires about his journey to Georgia State, advice on choosing a degree program and being a finalist in the International Trumpet Guild.
Pires was born in Bauru-São Paulo, Brazil and began his studies on the trumpet with Devanildo Balmant in the Guri Project and alongside João Xavier at the Tatui conservatory.
Pires traveled to the US during his high school years as an exchange student in Lubbock (TX). He won several prizes, including the Texas All-State 5A Symphony Band 1st Chair, 2015 All-region, TMEA HS Symphony Orchestra 1st Chair and an "Outstanding Solo" award at the state competition.
Pires returned to Brasil to earn his bachelor's degree from UNICAMP while studying with Dr. Paulo Ronqui. He performed with the Piracicaba Symphony Orchestra, Mozarteum Symphony Orchestra and the São Paulo Youth Symphony Band.
"High on my bucket list is to one day perform with Concertgebouw Orchestra playing the 2nd Symphony from Mahler's "Resurrection."
