Dr. Alessandra Raengo – Professor
Dr. Alessandra Raengo has been promoted to full professor. Dr. Raengo is the Founding Editor in Chief of the “liquid blackness: journal of aesthetics and black studies”, recently acquired by Duke University Press, a journal entirely devoted to the intersection between Black Studies and aesthetic theory she initially founded with her graduate students here at Georgia State. Under her leadership, “liquid blackness” developed into a multi-pronged project: a theoretical concept, a methodology, a pedagogy, an archival project, a digital humanities initiative archived at the Library of Congress, a curatorial practice, and a praxis of community-building. Most recently, Dr. Raengo has been one of the driving forces behind AMPLIFY, a showcase for film students’ work that seeks to foster artistic and critical dialog around systemic anti-blackness. Daniel Robin – Professor
Daniel Robin has been promoted to full professor. Professor Robin makes personal experimental documentary films that often incorporate fictional devices to mythologize his family history. His film my olympic summer won the Sundance Film Festival Jury Prize for Short Filmmaking, the Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary Short at the Florida Film Festival, Best Documentary Short at the Nashville Film Festival, Director’s Choice Award at the Black Maria Film Festival, and the Onda Curta Award at IndieLisboa Film Festival. Robbie Land – Senior Lecturer
Robbie Land has been promoted to senior lecturer. He received an M.F.A. in 2006 from Virginia Commonwealth University, and his work has been exhibited at Kunst Film Biennale, Museum Do Chiado, The International Experimental Cinema Exposition, Scientifical Center Espace Mendès, Mono No Aware and Museum of Contemporary Art Georgia in Atlanta. Dr. Harper Cossar – Senior Lecturer
Dr. Harper Cossar has been promoted to senior lecturer. Dr. Cossar’s essays have appeared in “Convergence Media History,” “The Screen Media Reader: Culture, Theory, Practice, Journal of Film and Video,” “Quarterly Review of Film and Video” and the “Journal of New Media and Culture.” His research interests include aesthetic and formal poetics across media platforms, mediated sports coverage, technology and culture, and the interplay of authorship and genre. Dr. Deanna Joseph – Professor
Dr. Deanna Joseph has been promoted to full professor. In addition to being a professor of music, she is also the current Director of Choral Activities. Dr. Joseph’s research in the area of 19th-century choral-orchestral performance-practice has led to invited presentations on the topic at several division conferences of the American Choral Director’s Association and at the national convention for the National Collegiate Choral Organization. Dr. Joseph holds conducting degrees from the Eastman School of Music, where she was awarded the Walter Hagen Conducting Prize. She is the founder and artistic director of the Atlanta Summer Conducting Institute (ASCI), a weeklong, summer conducting master class that draws conductors from across the country. Read more...
Dr. Kenneth Long – Professor
Dr. Kenneth Long has been promoted to full professor. He currently serves as clarinetist/bass clarinetist with the Utah Festival Opera Orchestra and performs frequently with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. He is a founding member/principal clarinetist of the Atlanta Chamber Winds (heard on Albany Records), principal clarinetist of the Atlanta-based contemporary chamber ensemble Bent Frequency, and has been a guest artist on numerous occasions with the Atlanta Chamber Players. Dr. Chester Phillips – Professor, Interim Director
Dr. Chester Phillips, recently named the new interim director of the School of Music, has been promoted to full professor. He is currently in his tenth year as associate director of bands and director of athletic bands at Georgia State University. Under his leadership the GSU Panther Band has received several honors and accolades including participation in the 2014 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, performing in the Pepsi Super Bowl LIII Halftime show (2019), marching in the 57th Presidential Inaugural Parade, a national top-ten honor by the 2013 College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), and a top-five honor by the 2012 & 2016 Southern Division of CBDNA. Dr. Phillips received the Bachelor of Music degree in music education from the University of Georgia, the Master of Music degree in music education from the University of Illinois and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in wind conducting at the University of Georgia.
