Alumna Gabrielle Beteag (M.Mu. ’18) is an American mezzo soprano. In March 2020, she was named a Grand Finals Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, where she was praised for her “choice voice” and “dramatically vivid” performance. Hear from Gabrielle as she talks about this career-defining competition, on stage at the Met and the support along the way.
“[For the Grand Finals]…there was just a lot of deep breathing before going on the stage. I remember holding the stage manager’s hand and him telling me that it was going to okay, that I was going to do well…”
In addition to the Met Competition, Atlanta-based Beteag has received accolades at competitions such as the Shreveport Opera Mary Jacobs Smith Singer of the Year Competition (Second Place, 2020), the Opera Birmingham Vocal Competition (Finalist, 2019) and the Kristin Lewis Vocal Scholarship Competition (Grand Prize Winner, 2018).
Beteag is in the midst of the 20-21 opera season as a Studio Player with The Atlanta Opera and will participate in the Merola Opera Program in San Francisco this summer.
